Inside Galeao Airport
Galeao Airport was so named after the Galleon Beach, located just behind the original passenger terminal, where the famous galleon Padre Eterno was built in 1663. The current facility was built as a training school for the Brazilian Air Force in World War II, and commercial operations began a year after the war. Galeao is known mainly for the inaugural flight of the Air France Concorde in 1976.
The airport operates out of two terminals, and plans to upgrade both terminals in the coming years to make way for increased usage in the wake of the World Cup and Summer Olympics.
