Background Information

From its first test flight in 1911, the strategic location of Bergen Airport meant a substantial military presence early on and a water aerodrome was established in 1919. After World War II, the decision to base an airport around Bergen was proposed and after significant NATO funding, the airport was completed in 1954. A NATO presence is still at the airport today in case of special contingencies. The rapid increase in passengers led to its makeshift terminal being rendered insufficient, and another terminal soon replaced it. In 2009, Bergen Airport was announced as Europe’s best and the world’s sixth-best. There are currently plans to build another new terminal to accommodate up to 10 million passengers.

Currently there is limited space for passengers in the near-capacity terminal, but there is still plenty of shopping and eating options available, if not a little expensive. Despite the majority of passengers arriving on business, there is little in the way of business facilities in the terminal itself. Bergen Airport also operates a helicopter terminal, as its location is perfect for trips to the oil and gas rigs in the North Sea and the airport’s relationship to the North Sea energy industry is strong.

Excursions

The outstanding location of the airport, located just 20 kilometers south of downtown Bergen, means that you can immediately take advantage of the convenient road network with a car rental Bergen Airport and through into Norway, a sparsely populated but wealthy country with an incredible culture that rivals its equally breathtaking scenery. Bergen was once an important Hanseatic city and is now the country’s seat of culture, providing an excellent music sphere and truly atmospheric surroundings. You can also easily access roads that lead into the rest of Norway and all the major cities in the area, such as Oslo, with a speed, convenience and personal freedom that public transportation just can’t beat. There is so much to see in this part of the world, and a car hire Bergen airport can make this journey a reality.
