Very thankful happycar suggested adding a GPS to our rental. The street signs were hard to read, we would have been so lost!

Background Information

San Diego has a long history of pioneering aviation, beginning with where Charles Lindbergh tested and his solo transatlantic flight. The airport became the first certified airport to serve all aircraft types, including seaplanes, and was an important testing ground up until 1995, including several early sailplane designs. By 1942, a transformation of the runway took place when it was taken over by the Army Air Corps, and the airport started servicing commercial flights in 1949.

There are standard food and shopping facilities from what you would expect from a major single-runway airport, and various lounges for the business traveler to visit. San Diego Airport is committed to sustainability, and a portion of its infield is set aside as a nesting site for the endangered California Least Tern, where they lay their eggs in the sand and gravel surface at the southwest end of the airfield. There are also several well-known pieces of artwork on display at the airport – inside terminal 2 is a recreation of The Spirit of St. Louis. The airport promotes education about its long history, and sponsors an "airport explorers" program.

The outstanding location of the airport, located practically in the heart of downtown San Diego, means that you can drive quickly and easily into the city to explore its fantastic history and gastronomy with a car rental San Diego airport. You can also easily access roads that lead into Mexico, and all of the major cities on the West Coast, such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco, with a speed, convenience and personal freedom that public transportation just can’t beat. There is so much to see in this part of the world, and a car hire San Diego Airport can make this journey a reality.
