Background Information

Barcelona Airport began in 1918 and began commercial operations in 1927 with Iberia’s first route. From the 40's to the 70's a series of development projects were enacted, building runways, a control tower and two terminals that saw the airport handling over 5 million passengers annually. In 2006 a new terminal was opened that now manages the majority of flights from the airport. From February 2014, Barcelona was the first Spanish airport to receive a daily Airbus A380 operated by Emirates on its routes to Dubai International Airport, an important milestone in its history. Nowadays, the airport remains popular for domestic and European travelers, and has seen an increase in budget airlines operating from the airport.

The two terminals were designed by famous Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill and, alongside the sort of amenities and facilities you would expect of a major European hub, features a range of local Spanish art.

The outstanding location of the airport, located just 12 kilometers south of downtown Barcelona, means that you can immediately take advantage of the primary road network with a car rental Barcelona Airport and through into Spain, a diverse country with great beaches, fun nightlife and historic cities. Barcelona is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and is certainly one of the most visited, with a glut of beautiful architecture and vibrant culture to feast on. You can also easily access roads that lead into the rest of Spain and all the major cities in the area, such as Madrid and Valencia, with a speed, convenience and personal freedom that public transportation just can’t beat. There is so much to see in this part of the world, and a car hire Barcelona Airport can make this journey a reality.
