Bilbao: General information
A rental car in Bilbao makes for a lot, especially excursions to the surrounding area, nature and the coast. Set amidst hilly countryside, Bilbao is the center of the Basque Country, surrounded by a few dreamy little towns that charm their visitors with their own charisma. This magnetic city wins over its visitors with its soulful and kind people, the gleaming crystal river that soaks in the golden orange of the sun, and of course the intriguing architecture that is Basque.
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
Probably the most spectacular sight is the Guggenheim Museum, which is already amazing by its architecture. The glass, titanium, and limestone building, right in the city center, was designed by the famous architect Frank O'Gehry and is today one of the most important and modern museums in Spain. Here the visitor is given the opportunity to see especially modern and contemporary art of the 20th century. Three architects – Frank O. Ghery (USA), Arata Isozaki (Japan), and Coop Himmelblau (Austria) – were invited to compete to produce a design concept for the museum.
Azkuna Zentroa, Alhóndiga Bilbao
A majestic work of art by the talented architect that is Ricardo Bastida, restored by the multi-talented Phillippe Starcke in collaboration with Thibaut Mathieu. This now refreshed wine warehouse has been transformed into a multi-purpose venue located in the city center. Italian stage designer, Lorenzo Baraldi, graced Starcke with his materialization of his cinematographic vision with the 43 pillars that symbolize the continuum of wars, cultures, art, and religions of the world.
Teatro Arriaga
Bilbao is a city of diversity, combining old architecture and modern architecture. The Teatro Arriaga is a prime example of this ancient architecture. In 1890, this theater was built in the Neo-Baroque style. The façade has countless frescoes and details and shows the visitor the historical, romantic Bilbao.
Excursions with car hire in Bilbao
Should the visitor once have the desire to recover from the many new impressions of Bilbao, we recommend a trip with the rental car. In addition to the nearby coasts, the small town of Alonsotegi and its slightly mountainous hinterland, which is a popular recreation area, are worth mentioning.
