General information on Dublin

Dublin was originally founded in the 9th century by Viking settlers, taken under English control in the 14th century and grew into a major European city by the 1700's. The Christ Church Cathedral is the oldest building in Dublin, dating back to the 11th century. The crypt on which the cathedral was built predates the actual building. The second cathedral and largest in in Dublin, and Ireland, is St. Patrick's Cathedral, founded in 1191.

No trip to Dublin is complete without a tour of the Guinness Storehouse, a self-guided tour covering the 250 year history of the beer. You end at the top floor bar, of which a pint of the 'black stuff' is included in the entry price.

Malahide Castle is only a 9 mile drive from Dublin, this castle dating back to the 12th century. The estate was sold to the Irish government. The castle is free to visit and its botanic gardens behind it feature plants from all over.
