General Information

Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest city located on the western coast. It is a city greatly reliant on trade from its large ports. In the 18th century, the East India Company put this Swedish city on the map. They were responsible for bringing the first architectural style into the city. The easy going life on the sea is the way of life in Gothenburg. It is a popular university town being home to the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. That means the town is full of activities including the Göteborg International Film Festival, the Way Out West music festival, and the Gothia Cup soccer festival. The great city of Gothenburg has many crowning achievements including giving birth to the famous car company Volvo in 1927.

Attractions

The Old Town of Gothenburg is where you will find the city’s impressive shipyards. The Stora Hamnkanalen canal divides the Old Town in two parts. The northern portion is the harbor and in the south you find many museums and public squares.

One of the oldest neighborhoods, Haga, is filled with small specialty shops, stores selling vintage clothing, as well as handmade jewelry stores. In the charming streets of this neighborhood, you will find a great combination of both old and new. Historic wooden houses line the narrow streets of Haga Nygata, the most popular pedestrian shopping street in the district. There are many quiet cafes to take a short break or if you are interested in a full day of relaxation, try the Hagabadet Spa.

Liseberg is the biggest amusement park in Scandinavia. Here you will find roller coasters as well as concerts venues. The park opened its doors in 1923 and attracts around three million visitors a year. Forbes magazine has named Liseberg in the list of Top Ten amusement Parks in the World in 2005. This great attraction is also open in the winter months. There are fewer rides in operation but they open a Christmas Market filled with traditional Swedish cuisine. Some of the specialties include: mulled wine, and a döner kebab made with reindeer meat.

Excursions

Oslo is a 4 hour car trip from Gothenburg. Check out the capital city of Norway and it’s beautiful national parks which take up much of the city itself. The capital city of Sweden has an interesting mix of classical and modern influences. This cosmopolitan city has lots to offer including fine dining, art museums, and wide variety of large international stores and small local shops.
