General Information

Mexico City lies at an altitude of 2,240 meters and boasts a massive population of an estimated 20 million people. The city is divided into 16 boroughs, each of which offers their own unique attractions and atmosphere. During the day, Mexico City offers a variety of exciting activities and sightseeing opportunities for any age. At night, this bustling city really comes alive, providing a spectacular show of lights and sounds. The expansive metropolis is easily navigated via car, which allows you to explore the various aspects of the city at your own leisure.

To Do

Mexico City enjoys a rich historical heritage. Before the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in 1519, the Aztec city-state of Tenochtitlán flourished on the site of what is now Mexico City. Recent excavations have uncovered vast areas of ruins from this period of time, and provide a window into how the Aztec civilization existed. Live music is of course another great way to spend time in Mexico City. The famous Mariachis are scattered across the city and can be found performing for rapt audiences in restaurants or in one of the many plazas around the city. Mexico City also enjoys a rich artisan background, from pre-Hispanic folk-art to the fearless muralists of the 20th century.

Attractions

Perhaps the most well-known attraction in Mexico City is The Zocalo, the largest square in Latin America. Around this square is situated the historic center of the city, which boasts many significant colonial landmarks, the most famous of which is the Aztec Templo Mayor. Another great destination worth visiting is Coyoacán, a colonial town within the city, known for being a hub for art, students, museums, and an ever increasing counterculture. The Palacio Nacional, home to the office of the president of Mexico, is a great destination for art and architecture buffs. Here you can admire the works of the great 20th century muralist Diego Rivera; his imposing murals are heavily influenced by the rise and fall of the Aztec nation.

Eating

Food in Mexico is much more than just a means to an end. It is an ingrained part of their culture and enjoys a rich heritage. Most of the foods are based on corn products and are prepared in a great variety of methods. The most famous and well-known of these of course are tacos, tamales, and quesadillas. Locals will tell you the best way to enjoy these foods, from vendors on street sides or near public transport locations. Street food is ubiquitous in Mexico City and can be enjoyed mainly in the morning or in the evening. Open markets are also a great way of mingling with the local population while enjoying a colorfully topped Chalupa and a cold Horchata, followed by a delicious Churro filled with creamy dulce de leche. For people with a penchant for gourmet food, Mexico City also boasts a variety of top restaurants, where you may also enjoy traditional Mexican food, often with a more modern twist.

Excursions

If you rent car Mexico City, you will gain easier access to the various sight worthy locations outside of the metropolis. Thirty miles northeast of the city lays the ancient Mesoamerican city of Teotihuacán. Here you can gaze upon the impressive pre-Columbian pyramids, or take a stroll through the Avenue of the Dead, the main road down the center of the ruins. Iztaccihuatl, a dormant volcano located 30 miles southeast of Mexico City, offers an awesome scenic change to the busy city life. If you are feeling bold and adventurous, you might attempt a hiking trip up the side of the volcano. Keep in mind you are already at a relatively dizzying height in Mexico City, which could cause breathing difficulties through extended physical exertion.

If you want to explore another country, you can take your car hire Mexico City to the United States to the north or Costa Rica to the south.
