Mexico City Airport was first opened in 1931 as Balbuena Military Airport, with five runways. In 1943, the airport was recognized as an international one with the capabilities of processing international flights; the first international route was to Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, USA. In subsequent years the airport received new terminals and facilities such as a control tower and new terminal. In 1953, President Miguel Alemán inaugurated the airport, thus giving it the designation of a commercial airport. In May of 2003, the federal government announced plans to expand the airport and attach a new terminal, which inaugurated in 2008; Terminal 2 increased the operational capacity of the airport by 15 percent, and greatly increased the comfort and ease of travel. This addition increased the capacity from 20 million people per year to 32 million per year.
