General Information
Founded by Spanish governor Pedro Arias de Avila in 1519, Panama City quickly rose in importance as a center of government and church authority. This progression, however, did not last very long. In 1671, the city was ransacked and burnt to the ground by pirates. The city was rebuilt three years later eight kilometers to the southwest. The new location made it more secure from outside attacks, but the city failed initially to regain its former glory. In the 1850's, with the completion of the Panama Railroad, the city saw an increase in population and economic clout, mainly because of gold seekers who were coming through on their way to California. After gaining independence in 1903, Panama City was established as the capital city of the new nation, with the help of foreign aid, mainly from the United States, Panama began to develop its infrastructure, with the pivotal project being the Panama Canal. Despite several setbacks, including the U.S. government-backed ousting of Dictator Manuel Noriega, Panama City has emerged as the leading city in Central America, both in terms of economic power and social progressiveness. As of 1999, the United States has relinquished control of the canal to the Panamanian government, and has closed its military bases in the country.
