General Information

Tallinn, formerly known as Reval, which means Danish Town, was captured by the Kingdom of Denmark in the 13th century. Since then, the city has changed hands several times; Danes, Germans, Swedes, Poles, and Russians have at times controlled the Estonia, and have left a lasting influence on the countries culture. In 1285, Tallinn joined the Hanseatic League and the city prospered due to the increase in trade, making it a strategically important harbor. After gaining its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Tallinn transformed into a contemporary mid-sized city, with a beautifully restored Old Town and modern business district.

Local cuisine features hearty dishes based upon black bread, potatoes, meat, and dairy products; marinated eel, blood sausage, and sauerkraut stew with pork are among the favorite meals of Estonians. During the summer months, people in Tallinn will take advantage of the many bounties nature provides. It is common to see colorful berries, fruits, and vegetables fill the dining table. Berries and fruits are made into marmalade and stored for the winter months.

One of the main attractions of the city is its beautiful Old Town, featuring architecture dating back to Estonia’s medieval times, the old town is one of the best preserved medieval sites in the world. The area is a perfect place to take an afternoon stroll. You can view the medieval walls, walk through the narrow alleyways, take pictures of the impressive spires, or just relax near the square with a steaming cup of coffee.

Take advantage of your car hire Tallinn

A day trip to Lahemaa National Park in the north of the country is a great way to take advantage of your HAPPYCAR rental car. You will have the opportunity to admire the Estonian nature and remove yourself from the hectic city life. The park features many water oriented sites including waterfalls, rapid streams, forests and lakes. Lahemaa National Park is also home to the historic landmarks Palmse and Sagadi Manors, as well as the Forest Museum.

While in Tallinn, you should take a trip to some of the famous Estonian Islands. Tere are over 1,500 in total, so you might want to narrow your selection to some of the larger and more well-known ones. The largest one, Saaremaa Island, features an intact and well-restored medieval castle; thatched rooftops, stone fences, functioning windmills, and homemade beer are signs you have landed on Saaremaa. The islands are reachable via your rental car; you must book tickets in advance for the ferries, or, during the winter months, you can safely cross the frozen waters with your car.

You may also wish to visit Helsinki in nearby Finland. Just take your rent a car Tallinn on a ferry north across the Gulf of Finland to this bustling city. Helsinki has lots to offer in terms of culture, history, nature, and adventure; you can visit one of the many museums, take a stroll through Esplanade Park, visit the imposing Helsinki Cathedral, or enjoy an exciting day at the Linnanmaki Amusement Park. If you want to learn more about the Hanseatic trade, you can visit cities like Hamburg and Bremen in Germany, or Riga in Latvia!

Book now with HAPPYCAR and take full advantage of the flexibility and freedom your Tallinn rent a car grants you. Our quick and hassle free service provides you with a great springboard into your adventures. The HAPPYCAR team wishes you a pleasant journey!
