General Information

Vienna is a city of many things. It is a city of history, culture, art, and music, and to try to pin it down any further would be to undermine the city’s rich variety that seems to blend so smoothly into each other. Alongside the imperial architecture and classical music, fits a vibrant contemporary arts culture with a bustling coffee scene. Central Vienna is the biggest draw for tourists, and many sights are to be found along this one mile stretch and the ring encircling it. The entire city center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it would be folly to spend the majority of your time on the historical beauty without immersing yourself in Vienna’s present and future.

To Do

A great place to start is in the center, where for seven centuries the Imperial Palace housed the Hapsburg empire, and as you enter the Palace you can treat yourself to some Lipizzan ballet with the Spanish Riding School. There is a rich array of museums to peruse in the museum quarter, from the Judenplatz Museum for the Holocaust remembrance to the Karlsplatz Museum for Vienna’s early history. The Schönbrunn Zoo is the oldest existing zoo in the world and is incredibly popular today, with baby pandas and newborn elephants. Vienna is a top destination for music, with the historical Museum of Sound and the interactive House of Music. It is also one of the premier destinations in the world for opera, and the very best productions are staged by the Vienna State Opera.

Attractions

The city is perhaps most famous for its glut of classical composers, with Mozart chief among them. The Mozarthaus in Vienna is where he spent two and a half years and a visit there will give you a unique insight into his life. Underneath the Capuchin Church is the Imperial Burial Vault, where members of the Hapsburg dynasty were laid to rest, and the sight of these royal sarcophagi is likely to leave a lasting impression. Schönbrunn Palace is a baroque complex packed with showrooms and gardens that serve as a fantastic example of an entire architectural period.

Eating

With Viennese cuisine something of a fusion of various countries in the area, food in Vienna is a multi-faceted experience. The one constant, however, is sausage, and snack bars are dotted all over the city offering this fast food. You can also find a lot of Greek and Turkish food around the streets, and the food markets are very active, transforming for festivals and offering a wide selection of foodstuffs. For something a little more upmarket, the restaurant Weinbotschaft has been raved about for years, and features entirely organic produce in Annagasse, one of the most beautiful parts of the city. Don’t forget Vienna’s legendary and iconic coffee houses, which offer some of the best beans in the region.

Excursions

A Vienna car hire will open you up to a wide range of beautiful sights and sounds: throw in lakeside excursions to Burgenland or trips to the Danube Valley, Znojmo in the Czech Republic or Bratislava in Slovakia and a car hire in Vienna becomes a gateway to central Europe. If you feel like some Austrian wines and a scenic excursion out of the city, take a trip to one of the wine-producing villages on Vienna’s outskirts. To the north of the Danube, Stammersdorf is surrounded by vineyards and filled with traditional, family-run taverns. For other Austrian adventures, you can visit Innsbruck or Salzburg to really experience the different aspects of the country.
