What to See in Amsterdam

The best way to start a tour of the capital is by starting in the center, the dam. This is the historical city center and has some stunning buildings such as the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and the memorial to the casualties of the Second World War. Near the Dam, you will find the famous De Wallen, the region is home to the Red Light District as well as other alternative scenes. The region is worth a drive through as it is one of the oldest in the city thus it has some of the oldest architecture such as the 800 year old Oude Kerk, the oldest building in the city dating back to 1206. Amsterdam is the home to over 1,200 bridges of which the most famous is the Magere Brug, which opens up to let boat traffic through. It used to be opened by hand till the mid-nineties and at night the bridge is lit up and looks fantastic.

As with most of the northern central Europe the weather can be very unpredictable so should you find that the weather takes a turn for the worst one can find some fantastic museums to take cover in such as the the Rijksmuseum. It is the National Museum for Art and History, located in Amsterdam on the Museum Square inside a stunning building. The museum displays over 8,000 paintings although it holds about 1 million pieces, including collections from many famous Dutch painters.
