Casablanca attractions and Travel Tips

Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, you have to walk into one when you visit the stunning city of Casablanca. Casablanca is Morocco’s most European city, having been modeled on the French city of Marseille. Its decidedly cosmopolitan atmosphere will shatter any preconceptions you might hold of North Africa. The city is dotted with trendy beach clubs where men and women socialize. The city offers stark contrasts between underlying social problems and sprawling shanty towns as well as grand boulevards, well-maintained public parks, fountains, and remarkable colonial architecture. HAPPYCAR is here to help you find the best car hire Casablanca has to offer so you can take full advantage of this lively city. We check the prices of international and local providers so that you don’t have to check each website to provide you with the best deals on a Casablanca car hire to make your money go further on a rental car that fits your specific vacation needs.

General Information

In the 10th century BC, Berber fisherman installed themselves in the southern part of current day Casablanca. The area enjoys a natural harbor on a strategic location along trading routes used by the Phoenicians for three centuries. Romans were also active in this area at the height of their power. In the 14th century, the city arose as an important trading center and began to take shape as a true Islamic town, with a mosque and city walls. Pirates made the port their base in the 15th centuries, angering the Portuguese, who ransacked and destroyed the town. In the 18th century, the sultan began reconstruction of the town and renamed it Casablanca. Trade began to flourish anew with an important new commodity, tea which led to a large influx of Europeans into the city. Under French occupation, the city underwent extensive architectural and structural projects. The city became Morocco’s commercial capital and largest port during this time, which still holds true today.

Take advantage of your Casablanca car rental

A rental car in Casablanca will give you the freedom and flexibility to explore the port city at your own leisure. The city’s most obvious and most impressive attraction remains the Hassan II Mosque, the largest mosque in Morocco and Africa and the seventh largest in the world. At 210 meters, its minaret is the tallest in the world. The city, true to its cosmopolitan attitude and European influence, features the only Jewish museum in the Muslim world. The highlight of your stay in Casablanca will no doubt be the Mauresque and Art Deco architecture featured throughout the city with the former blending traditional Moroccan designs with the more liberal influences of early-20th-century Europe, and the former is a reflection of the Parisian Art Deco style, which is characterized by ornate wrought-iron styles. Prime examples of these architectural styles can be found along the Mohammed V boulevard. The former Préfécture, Palais de Justice, and the General Post Office can be found here. The city naturally offers lots of shopping opportunities and the city’s old-walled part of town is the perfect place for a stroll through some of the quaint, narrow streets lined with shops offering good bargains on authentic wares and crafts. In the town center you will find wonderful displays of fish, spices, and other foodstuffs at one of the many outdoor markets.

If you wish to experience Morocco’s rugged side, you can take your rental car further south to the High Atlas Mountains. They give you stunning scenery, panoramic views, and superb hiking and trekking await you here. Todra Gorge, which features carved out cliff-sided canyons through the mountains, is a must-see. The final 600 meters of the Todra Gorge are the most spectacular as the canyon narrows to a flat stony track as little as 10 meters wide in places with sheer and smooth rock walls up to 160 meters high on each side.

You can make your way over to Marrakesh to explore and experience more of the Moroccan culture.
