Background Information
Malaga Airport has a special history, and since its founding in 1919 it is one of the oldest Spanish airports that have stayed in their original location. The airport was originally used as a military base from 1937, and opened up for commercial operations in 1946. The 60's saw a period of development, and a new runway, terminal and radar system was built throughout the decade. In line with the increase of package holiday flights a new terminal was erected in 1991 and the old terminal was transformed into a general aviation terminal. Budget airlines still receive much popularity at Malaga Airport, and traffic is steadily increasing throughout the year.
Malaga Airport has three terminals, due to the heavy passenger flows that can occur around the holiday season. Much of the traffic has transferred to the newest third terminal, which was designed by Bruce Fairbanks and is more than double the size of Terminal 2. Terminal 3 has the largest food hall in Europe, and the first National Geographic store in the world. There is also a wide range of shopping opportunities in the terminal.
