Kuala Lumpur was founded in 1857 by Rajah Abdullah, then ruler of Selangor State, who sent Chinese prospectors to seek out tin deposits near the confluence of the Gombak and Klang River. Settlers, mainly British investors, Malay farmers, and Chinese laborers, began to pour into the region in search of riches. Frank Swettenham, the British Resident of Selangor State, saw to it that Kuala Lumpur be modernized and molded into a proper capital city; he commissioned the design of solid, imposing structures. During WWII, the Japanese engaged in terrible acts of brutality against the Chinese living in Malaysia, killing at least 5,000 in the first few weeks of the occupation. In parallel to this, the Japanese gained favor with many Malays by promising them independence after the war was won. With the Japanese surrender in 1945, Malaysia suffered political and social strife, with race-wars between Chinese and Malays breaking out. Thousands of Chinese lost their homes in the aftermath of the riots, and the Muslim Malay community consolidated their control over the country. In 1996, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammed approved the construction of a new political capital 20 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur at Putrajaya, which was made the official seat of the Malaysian government in 1999. However, Kuala Lumpur still remains the legislative center and seat of parliament.
Take advantage of your car hire in Kuala Lumpur
With your Kuala Lumpur car rental you can explore Kuala Lumpur at your own leisure and pace. The capital is a modern, active city which, although strewn with towering high-rises and office buildings, still manages to retain its traditional roots. Air-conditioned shopping malls, designer bars, and a slew of top-class restaurants are contrasted by traditional festivals, bustling markets, and food-stalls selling traditional delicacies strewn throughout the city. Merdeka Square, the heart of downtown Kuala Lumpur, is perhaps the most important place in the city; it was here that the Malayan flag was hoisted for the first time following independence. Surrounding this square you will find some of Kuala Lumpurs most important historical buildings. These include the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the celebrated Royal Selangor Club Complex, the former National History Museum, St. Mary's Anglican Cathedral, and the original Kuala Lumpur Railway station, which is still operational today.
Take your rental car a few hours south of the capital to the birthplace of Malay civilization, Melaka. This historic port city boasts impressive architecture and a relaxing atmosphere not easily found in the capital. The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum and the Malacca Sultanate Palace Museum are a must see while visiting the city; the former showcases the local history of ethnic Chinese-Malays, whereas the latter, a replica of the Melaka Sultan's palace during the period of the Melaka Sultanate, focuses on the history of the region. The city is renowned for its religious buildings, namely St. Peter’s Church and the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. You can also visit the historic Stadthuys; constructed in 1650 as the residence of the Dutch Governor and his deputy, the structure embodies Dutch architecture. Nowadays it houses the Museum of History and Ethnography, and showcases traditional clothing and artifacts that date back to Melakas days of glory as an important harbor
