General Information
Marrakesh was founded in the 11th century AD by the first Almoravid Dynasty ruler, Youssef Ben Tachfine. Its beginning were humble, and the town probably only consisted of a camp and market, with a fortified town slowly rising around it. The first circuit of walls was raised in the 12th century, and is essentially the city’s present walls, which consist of tabia, the red mud of the plains. Marrakesh experienced its golden age when it became an important trading hub and marketplace at the end of the 12th century. During this time many of Marrakesh’s great structures were built. From the 17th to the 19th century, Marrakesh lost much of its commercial power, and by that time had already lost its status as the capital. Since Morocco gained independence in 1956, the city has experienced significant change including rural emigration from the Atlas and other areas, new methods of cultivation, and the development of a sizable tourist industry have been important factors in spurring the city’s economy. It enjoys a thriving industrial area and is the most important market and administrative center of southern Morocco.
