Rabat attractions and Travel Tips

Rabat is a relatively conservative city when compared to other large and vibrant Moroccan cities like Marrakesh or Casablanca. The capital’s image is reflected in its orderly administrative and diplomatic nature. However, the city is decidedly cosmopolitan, and boasts stunning colonial architecture, a slew of restaurants serving traditional Moroccan food, and a laid-back atmosphere not usually found in a capital city. HAPPYCAR is here to help you find the best car hire Rabat has to offer so you can take full advantage of this lively city. We check the prices of international and local providers so that you don’t have to check each website to provide you with the best deals on a car rental Rabat to make your money go further on a rental car that fits your specific vacation needs.

General Information

Rabat enjoys a rich cultural history evident in its colonial architecture and local customs and cuisine. Rabat itself was founded in the 12th century by Abd al-Mumin, the first Almohad ruler, as a fortified monastery used to quarter the troops for his jihad in Spain. In the late twelfth century, Yacoub el Mansour, whose reign in Morocco lasted almost thirty years, created a new imperial capital here. His legacy includes the splendid Oudaïa Gate of the Islamic fortification Bab er Rouah at the southwest edge of town and the early stages of the Hassan Mosque. After Mansour’s death, the city fell into neglect due to the establishment of the imperial cities of Fez, Meknes, and Marrakesh. It was resettled by Andalusian refugees and entered a period of international piracy and local autonomy, with its corsair fleets specializing in the plunder of merchant ships. The city became the colonial capital of France in the 19th century, and when Mohammed V returned to power in 1956, he decided to keep the city as his capital. He commissioned a number of large-scale developments, including a revamped riverside promenade and a new tramway system, to benefit the local people and bolster the city’s reputation and economic power.

Take advantage of your Rabat car rental

With your rental car you can take advantage of the many sights and sounds of Rabat. The city features stunning colonial architecture and a laid-back and cosmopolitan attitude. At the mouth of the Bou Regreg River you will find the Kasbah of the Udayas, an ancient citadel featuring narrow alleys, art galleries, and majestic panoramic views of the ocean. Rabat enjoys an extensive and rich history, reflected in its numerous monuments from Phoenician, Roman, and Islamic dynasty times. Rabat is also a great place to enjoy traditional Moroccan delicacies, including tagine, fish dishes, and typical Moroccan bread. You can take your rental car north to spend a day on one of the beaches, perfect for escaping the city life.

You can take your rental car three hours southwest of Rabat to the city of Marrakesh, which boasts a rich traditional culture, bustling markets, and large public squares. At the heart of the city is the Djemaa el Fna, a public square which features performances from local musicians, acrobats, dancers, and storytellers. The city is also famous for its impressive architecture dating back to its dynastic times. The outstanding ruins of the El Badi Palace, the intricate carvings of the Saadian Tombs and the Koutoubia Minaret are just some of the important historical sites you will encounter during your stay. The Koutoubia Mosque is perhaps the most famous landmark of Marrakesh. It is the most well-kept Islamic monument in North Africa and features a 70 meter high minaret which dominates the Djemma el Fna square. You can also see the European influence on the city in the colonial Ville Nouvelle part of the city, built in the 20th century by the French. This part of town boasts trendy cafes, upscale boutiques, and European-style gardens and boulevards.
