General Information

Over a thousand years ago, one of the first Indianized empires located on strategic parts of the archipelago, served as a trading hub which reached to vast parts of the archipelago. Due to this strategic location, India, China, and mainland Southeast Asia engaged in trade contracts with Indonesia, which in turn brought about the introduction of foreign culture and religion. These influences can still be seen today in Indonesian cuisine, religion, and language. During the eighth and ninth centuries, Indian Muslim traders had begun to introduce Islam to the country. By the time Marco Polo arrived at the end of the 13th century, Islamic states had already been established on one of the main Indonesian islands, Sumatra. Indonesia, a country rich in spices, attracted foreign attention in the form of Portuguese merchants, who attempted to gain a monopoly on the spice trade in the strategic trading port of Malacca in 1511. The Dutch East India Company wrestled control of the spice monopoly, which lasted into the 18th century. By the 19th century, they were exporting three-fourths of the world’s coffee supply from the island of Java. In 1945, after centuries of oppressive colonial rule, Indonesia gained its independence. Hit hard by the late 90’s Asian financial crisis, Indonesia has since recovered, and has become a beloved destination for tourism.

Take advantage of your Indonesia car rental

During your stay in Indonesia, a rental car will provide you with the most convenient method for exploring the archipelago. The islands are mostly produced through volcanic activity, which created towering mist-enshrouded mountains peppered with rice terraces and tropical rainforests. Indonesia boasts extensive wildlife sanctuaries and wilderness, all of which provide visitors with a myriad of opportunities to enjoy the landscape. Adventurers will be especially fond of Indonesia’s impressive trekking and hiking possibilities. Naturally, Indonesia also boasts impressive beaches and opportunities for marine activities such as surfing and scuba-diving. Island-hopping is an inescapable part of an Indonesian visit, and as such, you should take the time to explore some of the more well-known and popular ones. Of course, if you wish for a truly unique experience, you can take a trip to one of the lesser known and more remote islands for a truly wild experience.

Java, one of the most populous places in all of Asia, is one of Indonesia’s main islands. The landscape is dominated by hundreds of towering volcanos, some of which are still active; the fertile slopes, covered in shimmering rice fields, attempt to mask the looming presence of the volcanoes with a green blanket. The southern part of the island is home to the ethnic Javanese people, and functions as the center of their culture. Here you will find Yogyakarta and Solo, two cities still immersed in traditional dance, music, and art. The cities are ideal bases from which to explore the gigantic ninth-century Buddhist temple Borobudur, as well as the impressive Prambanan complex, a contemporary Hindu site.
